Why You Should Be Doing LISS Training

These days everyone is all about burning the most calories in the shortest space of time, we are go, go, go all the time not only in life but also with our training. Rarely do people slow down and take time for themselves and their mind anymore, the same thing can be said for workouts. When did you last go on a meaningful 30+ minute walk; around a park or forest, enjoying fresh air in the great outdoors, listening to an uplifting podcast or inspiring audiobook; taking time switched off from the screens we are surrounded by 24/7 and the noise of the busy city we live in?

LISS (Low Intensity Steady State) has so many amazing benefits and it’s a form of exercise most people skip in favour of HIIT. Low intensity workouts are a way you can burn a lot of calories, allow your body an active recovery day to help your body mend from any recent weights sessions or HIIT workouts, LISS is also a great fat burner and I find it to be a wonderful stress reliever. As well as all of this it helps with your lung capacity and heart function because you are asking your body to work at a constant and steady rate for an extended period of time. It’s truly win win!

LISS requires you to work at about 40% of your maximum output for at least 30 minutes but anywhere between 30 and 60 minutes is what I usually aim for.

Low intensity exercise allows me the time to sort through my thoughts, take some time away from scrolling on small screens and answering emails on larger ones. Personally, I jog, walk or go for a gentle cycle once a week in the fresh air – early morning or in my lunch break. It’s also very easy to do LISS abroad compared to a workout like a weights session. I love going on a holiday where you have the option to hike. It’s my favourite form of exercise, keeps me active when I’m exploring a new place and allows me to see the city in all its beauty from a birds eye view.

I genuinely look forward to this workout, raising my heart rate, stretching my muscles and finding 30 minutes to an hour to be alone with myself and my thoughts. Not only is is great for the body but it does wonders for the mind.

    Definitely going to have to try this! Love nice walks but this weather is not helping!
